Royal House Antiques is delighted to offer for sale this only known matching pair of very significant, original fully stamped 1963 Fritz Hansen, completely restored egg chairs. If you are looking at this listing then the chances are you know how rare and important these chairs are, they have been on a journey which Ill talk you through, the history of the chairs can be found below. These came to me with the original upholstery which was absolutely destroyed, they are both original 1963 examples with the correct matching stamps to the base so I new they were something special. I approached Fritz Hansen to ask them how I would go about restoring them, my usual upholsterers didnt have the skill or knowledge to work on pretty much the most complicated chairs ever made. Fritz Hansen said that they authorise and recommend one upholsterer to work on their vintage pieces and they put me in touch with them. I had to wait the best part of a year for the work to be started, it was then another 3-4 months before it was completed, during this time I had the finest cattle hide aniline leather imported from Italy, the chair padding had sunk on both pieces so the restorer stripped them back to the bare fibreglass frames, she then hand shaped and replaced all the padding with the correct materials, over the as mentioned 3-4 months, soaked and hand stitched the leather in place. The chairs then flew off to my leather polisher who was trained by Ralph Lauren when they rolled out their at home division across Europe, Ralph taught him how to restored and colour old leather using traditional techniques. These chairs have been hand dyed six times, shaded and sealed, they are now basically in perfect better than retail, new old stock condition, as good as if they had just rolled off the production line. The metal base frames have of course the original patination, I can have these professionally polished for the cost price however I prefer them as they are, it has taken nearly 60 years for them to obtain this colour and it would be a crime to strip it off. This pair will never come up for sale again, they are the only ones, if you are looking for the finest example in the world with the nicest hand dyed leather colour then look no further. The Egg was originally designed in 1958 for the lobby of the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen. The hotel was Jacobsen's largest commission to date and he designed everything in it, from the façade to the furniture, lighting and cutlery.

The Egg's curved shape was quite unusual for its time and it came about because of an equally unusual reason: Jacobsen wanted the interior of the hotel to be a direct contrast to the modernist exterior. The soft, organic lines of the Egg were to provide a refuge from the harsh glass and steel. When it was first exhibited, the Egg became something of a landmark in modern furniture design as it was made using new materials and a new construction method - a foam shell covered by upholstery. This opened up a world of possibility for other designers at the time. Fritz Hansen has been manufacturing Jacobsen's Egg chair since they were first released in the 1950s, right up to this day.

They're individually crafted by specialists at their Denmark factory, using only the finest quality materials. Every single Egg Chair is stitched by hand using a distinctive wave method.

Over 500 stitches are needed to perfect a fabric Egg Chair, while over 1,100 are required for a leather version. It's a time-consuming process, but it's this type of care and attention that give the chair it's premium look and feel.

Leather Egg Chairs have a timeless quality that simply cannot be replicated. You can see it, feel it and even smell it. They're made using only two, premium hides to ensure the leather won't be disrupted by seams or joins. And because leather matures beautifully, a leather Egg Chair will only get better as it gets older.

True heirloom pieces, they can be passed down from generation to generation, each time becoming more desirable than the last. Please note all measurements are taken at the widest point, if you would like any additional or specific measurements please ask.
